Powering Down
Powering down is about improving energy efficiency, especially in our buildings.
Doing this saves money – at an individual level because you use less energy, and at a national level because less energy needs to be produced, so less infrastructure is needed with reduced operating costs.
And it’s about reducing impact on the environment: lower carbon from energy production and fewer materials needed to produce new infrastructure.

HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN POWER DOWN

Install A Smart Meter
Read the guide from the Energy Saving Trust, and find out how you can use a smart meter to save money.

Switch To LED Lighting
Not only do LED lights save you money to light your home, but they have a much longer life too than traditional bulbs. Read the lighting guide from the Energy Saving Trust.

Keeping Your Home Warm For Less
Here are some top tips from the HomeOwners Alliance to reduce your energy use while keeping your home cosy.

Get An Insulation Survey Of Your Home
Both Cosy Thame and Zero Carbon Haddenham have thermal imaging cameras for use by local residents to help you check how well your home is insulated.
Contact the organisations directly for details about how you can make use of the cameras.

Check Your Hot Water Use
Have you ever worked out how much your shower is costing you? This article from Metro is eye-opening! Installing an energy efficient shower head and reducing the time spent in the shower could have a substantial impact on your energy bills. (You can work out your own shower cost using this shower cost calculator).

Get A Free Home Energy Assessment
Both Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are part of the Better Housing Better Health programme, developed to help people improve the energy efficiency of their homes. More information here – including link to check if you could be eligible for grants.
